2012 Christmas

So if you want pics of my christmas, you're more than likely going to have to refer to my sister's blog because, well, I just don't remember to bring the camera out very often. And, because I'm so wanting to at least slightly improve my photography skills, I almost always had the camera on manual which almost always left me without the shot I aimed for.

Anyway, I'm gonna give you a quick recap of what this Christmas looked like. Well...I'm gonna try to make it quick.

So we left Houston the Friday before Christmas after the hubs got off. And because Zoë's teeth decided to cause problems while I was supposed to be packing, we had to do that once he got home. That left us leaving here right around 7 pm. Not bad considering he got off at 6 and didn't make it home until around 630ish.

We were ever grateful that we were able to leave Friday because that meant four full days in Baton Rouge which allowed us to spend time with his family, ample time with mine, and even some time to see Ben's nanny. (Aka godmother. "Nanny" is the cajun name for a godmother.) We weren't able to see any friends with all the things my mom had planned for us and many of them were out of town, as well.

Saturday morning was spent recouping from arriving in BR after midnight and Zoë's teeth promptly crashing sleeping party, not allowing us rest until 230 am. Good times!

Saturday afternoon/evening we spent with Ben's family. I forgot my camera so I have no pictures from that. We enjoyed spending time with them, getting to see our nephews from his side.  (Yep, we have two nephews on each side of our family, but that could change depending on what Linds' baby #3 is. She finds out in January and I can't wait to find out!) And of course, no time with a newborn is complete without being peed on :) He went through the diaper and onto both my shirt and pants!

SCORE: Caleb 2 - Aunt Meg 0

I think he was aiming to make it hard for me to win before he even scored!

Sunday my entire family got together for lunch and my mom made her amazing lasagna! Our family is so large now that we almost ate the entire pan. Crazy!

I did have my camera out for a sec and happened to snap this jewel:

One of Brayden's many "I want to hold she" moments :) Love that kid!
(Oh and btw, he wants his new little sibling to be a girl and name her Zoë too! HA!)

Christmas Eve was spent hanging out and enjoying one another's company. Not much happened that day, which was a great time for Ben to catch up on the zzz's lost Saturday morning...night?

And then there was Christmas. Zoë's FIRST christmas! She loved the paper a lot. Which was good because that's all we got her ;) Here is a pic I snapped. (I'm not posting the video, though that it mostly what I got since my sis had her camera out and going.)

If you're child likes rattles/objects that make noise, they will L.O.V.E. this phone. Zoë is also enamored with the string, as you can see.

My dad carved a watermelon. Though it was hard to capture an entire pic of the thing, I still must show you his mad, awesome skills:
Heck yes!

Oh and I was also able to take a picture with the Hulk:
Couldn't believe he wanted to sit on my lap :) Made my day!

Captain America, Iron Man, and Hulk posed for me too!
From Left to Right: my hubby, Brayden, and Drew, my bro-in-law

I was also able to capture a very sweet pic of Zoë with her Great, Great Aunt Rina:
Love them both SO much!

Christmas was a crazy busy day with lots of family to spend time with and enjoy one another's company. We shared laughs and enjoyed watching the kids play with all their new toys.

I must say my favorite part of our time in Baton Rouge was watching the cousins interact. And boy did they play with each other. Zoë LOVED being around both Connor and Brayden and there were many times one of the boys, sometimes both, would walk up to her, lay down next to her, and start talking or pat her. They played quite well together. Connor and Brayden even liked to be like her, or in Brayden's terms, "I'm doing what she doing." (Gah! I don't think you can understand how much I LOVE how he calls her "she" at times. In his mind, if he's not using her name then he should refer to her as "she" and it gets me. EVERY. STINKIN'. TIME!)

And just for the record, I love all my nephews the same. I just love how he calls her "she".

I also miss my greeting from C-man every time he saw me: "Hi Medan! HI MEDAN! HI!!"

Miss those boys so!

Well, that's a wrap! Christmas was great. Hope all of you guys enjoyed yours. And may your new year roll in greeting you with a warm welcome!

Headed Home

Well, the time has come for us to say good-bye to our family here in Baton Rouge. I'm not going to type much as I want to spend my last moments here with them.

Who knows the next opportunity we will have to all be together like this. It is a bit difficult when you factor in, well next time it will be four, grandkids, nine or more adults, and a total of over 15 hours driving time between everyone.

That just makes it all difficult.

Hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas holiday and isn't keeling over too much from an over indulgence of sweets. I know I had more than my fair share and I will also miss all the good Louisiana food we ate while we were here. Boudin. Red Beans and Rice. Cracklins.

*sigh*

I'm feeling like I ate too much just after typing that. HA!

Anyway, safe travels to all who are braving the roads. Pray my sister and her family make it home, guys. Arkansas has seen some bad winter weather and their family is going to have to drive through some form of it. So pray they make it home safely. And that her boys do well for a 3.5 yo and a just turned 2 yo.

Christmas Break

Hey there, you guys!

We made it safely into Baton Rouge last night and are enjoying the company of our family. Just wanted to let you guys know I will be taking a couple days hiatus from the blog as we spend the little time we have here with our loved ones. (Then again, I accidentally take hiatus' all the time so this one probably doesn't come as a surprise :])

Hopefully, I will have some pictures and a few stories to share once I come back.

May you, as you hopefully enjoy your holiday season, be reminded of the reason we celebrate: the birth of Christ who came so that we might be able to have a relationship with the Creator. He is the reason to celebrate this season, for had He not chosen to Love, there would be no hope of an eternity with Him.

Merry Christmas!

"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this." Isaiah 9:6,7 NASB

From Our Home

To yours.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and since we couldn't send a card out to everyone we know or my few faithful followers:

This Might Seem Random...

...but I keep having an anonymous comment sent to my inbox. It never makes it on the blog. So is this a robot? Here...maybe you can help. This is what the comment comes in as EVERY. TIME:

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Memory Monday v. 9":

bear grylls messer
Also see my web site > bear grylls messer

And it's usually on different posts but every now and then, I'll get the same one saying the same thing on the same post but different days (i.e. Nov 21, Nov 30, Dec 3, etc.).

I'm not really sure there is anything I can do about this either because even if I chose not to use Disqus, I would deactivate the crazy captcha anyway because it drives me nuts when I have to do it to leave a comment on someone else's blog.

Anyone else have this problem?

Literary Junkies [v. 1]

So I missed it by a day, but yesterday I dedicated my post to the Sandy Hook victims and didn't want to post anything else. Glad I found this link-up because I absolutely love to read. You can ask my sister, Lindsey. Pretty sure she used to make fun of me for how much I read :)

Pink Heels Pink Truck

1] What are you currently reading? Tell us about it.
I am currently finishing of LOTR: Return of the King.
So. good.
I will admit, I'm not an avid Tolkien fan, but then again I say that comparing myself to my husband who is an over-the-top LOTR fan, to the point he knows, loves, and frequently visits The Encyclopedia of Arda for funsies. This book has taken me the longest to read of probably any book I've read in years. I think because he is constantly painting word pictures, I struggle to read through it as quickly as say a Karen Kingsbury book. However, I like it none the less and hope to soon be finished.

2] If you could choose any author in the world to write a story based on your life, who would you choose? Why?
Hmmm...probably Karen Kingsbury. Or Francine Rivers. Because I love the way they weave their stories. And as far as Kingsbury goes, she already does that on a pretty consistent basis with others lives through her "Forever in Fiction".
3] Tell us about your favorite place to read.
Well, the answer to this honestly depends on my mood. Some days I long to be inside a Starbucks Coffee or some other coffee house with a good cup of jo. Then there are times I want to be snuggled under a blanket tucked into the corner of my couch with natural light seeping in through my windows. Still others I love to grab a blanket and head to the park to find a nice space either next to or close to trees. And which one all depends on my mood. Though these days, the couch usually has to suit me because I don't feel like packing up myself and a baby to get out. Takes too long :)

4] What books would you buy for lovers of a) suspense/mystery, b) chicklit, c) comedy, d) literary fiction, e) nonfiction, f) classics, g) biography? (You can choose how many of those subcategories you want to talk about.)
My mind is a bit fried and the only thing I can come up with right now is probably my favorite classic that I've read to date:

And that's all I have for you guys.

9 Months

[disclaimer for this post: it's going to be a long one. I'm recording, in more detail than normal, Zoë's food likes/dislikes. Feel free to skim through :)]
Oh. My. Word! I cannot believe three quarters of a year has gone by. Zoë is getting so. big.

It's unbelievable.

Her actual 9 month "birthday" was last week, but I wanted to wait for the post until we saw the pediatrician. We went today and let me just say, I was so spoiled by the set up at our peds office in Baton Rouge. Maybe they have a similar set up at some peds office here. However, I highly doubt it. I have yet to find an office with 20+ pediatricians practicing in the building.

Don't get me wrong; the facility was nice and kept up. What they didn't have was a newborn, well, and sick child waiting area with the sick and newborn each being completely closed off to the well child. Yes, they had well and sick. but everyone was breathing the same air (aka no doors to close off for the sick child waiting). I also was spoiled knowing that if we ever had to have tests run, there was a full lab in the building in BR. Here, it's not far considering most pediatricians practice extremely close to a hospital and the ped we saw is right next to one of the major Katy hospitals, but I wasn't a fan of having to get in the car to drive around the block. It just isn't fun wrestling a tired 9 month old in and out of her car seat.

*sigh*

I will become accustomed to it. It isn't bad. I was just so spoiled by the convenience of great peds with a good lab all in one car ride.

Anyway, on to...
9 month stats:

  • Weight: 19 lbs 8 oz - That's a little less than I expected, but not much! You're up almost a complete 3 pounds since you're six month visit, meaning you've been gaining about a pound per month.
  • Length: 28 3/4". A whole 2 1/2"! I knew you had grown longer more so than gained chub :)
  • Head Circumference: 17 1/4"
  • You're still in a size 3 diaper and I have a feeling we might stay here for another few months, especially considering your weight gain will start slowing down.
  • Food: You eat three solid feedings a day. We've tried more soft chunky, self-feeding foods, but you seem not quite ready for that. The only finger foods you eat and eat well are puffs, cheerios, and tiny cubed cheese. I cut out baby size cubes of cheddar or mozzarella for you to feed yourself and you seem to like that. You're not the biggest fan of cooked baby carrots but your affinity for them and ability to eat them in small chunks is improving. You absolutely love when I add cinnamon or nutmeg to your fruit. You're also a fan of me adding cumin to your veggies. We're just starting to try garlic powder in some of your veggies. We've had to start giving you a fruit for breakfast and lunch and a green and orange or other veggie for dinner. You would refuse the veggies after you had a bit of fruit :) Here is a list of the foods you eat and your affinity for them:
FRUITS
[apple]: absolutely L.O.V.E! If you refuse it and/or don't finish it all, I know
something is wrong or bothering you. It's a rare occasion for you to not finish this
when it's the only fruit you're getting. You also really enjoy when I add cinnamon.
Can't say I blame you there, cinnamon apples are so good, in my opinion.

[pear]: another fave of yours, though it doesn't top apple.

[peaches]: you're a pretty big fan of these too.

[banana]: least fave of all the fruit you've tried. It consistently has been one you're
likely to not finish the entire serving. It helps if I add another fruit to the mix or
add cinnamon or nutmeg, but it still doesn't guarantee I'll get you to finish.

[kiwi]: you seem to really like it. You've only had it a few times and you prefer if
it's mixed in with cottage cheese, oatmeal, or yogurt. However, we discovered
that kiwi and yogurt make a really bad, runny mess :)

[blueberries]: you're actually starting to enjoy this one, though in the beginning you
wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. I still only give it to you mixed with other
fruit, but you're seeming to really like it.

[avacado]: you haven't had much of this since you seemed to quit eating them.
However, your dislike of them may have been short lived as I gave you a small
chunk a week or so ago with a touch of lemon juice and you seemed to like it ok.
Not enough for me to go out and buy some for you, but enough that I think you
might enjoy them as you're able to eat more foods/spices.

VEGGIES
[green beans]: you love your green beans. This is probably one of your favorite
veggies, though if I gave you a choice, I'm pretty sure you'd only eat fruit.

[peas]: you like pease, but not on a consistent basis. Sometimes you seem to not
want/like them at. all. I honestly think it has something to do with teething
because you also refuse this one the most when you're gums are bothering you.
You did enjoy eating them the other night with the garlic powder in them.

[sweet potato]: I retract my "only eat fruit" statement. You L.O.V.E. you some
sweet potato! It is also a rare occasion for you to not complete a serving of this.
And you're also more of a fan with spices thrown into the mix, though this is a
bit more rare because I have to mix in your pasta or meat (more on that later).

[butternut squash]: this is another fave. Sometimes you seem to not want it,
but for the most part you're quite excited when you realize what you're eating.

[pumpkin]: this is newer on your menu but you have seemed to love it from the start.
Again, you're a bigger fan when spices are thrown in.

[cauliflower]: you seem to really like this. You didn't even make an "I'm
not quite sure about this" face when you first tasted it

[carrots]: like I said earlier, you love carrots pureed. You're just not sure
when I've made them soft cooked. If my intuition is right, it's because
you're not quite ready for finger foods, though you are rapidly nearing
that phase.

MEATS
[turkey]: you like it ok, but you're definitely no fan when you're gums are sore.
It absolutely has to be mixed in with a fine puree, otherwise you're gonna
reject it. The puree can be thick (i.e. sweet potato) but it cannot be
chunky/coars (i.e. peas).

[chicken]: you seem to prefer chicken to turkey. You will not eat either when
they are on their own. It must be added to a veggie. However, chicken is ok
in coarser veggies like green beans and peas. Not sure why either.

GRAINS/GRAIN-CONTAINING FOODS
[cheerios]: girl, you love cheerios! It's so cute to watch you crunch them with
your front teeth.

[puffs]: you also like to self-feed with these. Both cheerios and puffs are
becoming a rare floor find when you feed yourself. Almost all of them
end up in your mouth :) Oh and by the way, we're having to work on
not playing chubby bunny when you eat these. You like them so much
you'll put one after another after another in your mouth.

[pasta]: your growing in your liking of pasta. It has to be mashed into tiny
pieces but the only time you really seem to refuse it now is when you're
gums are giving you problems.

[rice]: you like rice in your food. You'll even eat it in your fruit. You may
even prefer when it's mixed with fruit. Currently I cook it really soft and
chop it into small bits with a food processor. No more rice cereal for you :)

[oatmeal cereal]: you love this only if it's mixed with you're fruit. Can't say I
blame you as I'm not a huge fan of plain oatmeal either.

DAIRY PRODUCTS
[cottage cheese]: we just started this a couple weeks ago and you love it! I think
it makes you feel like a big girl. Not sure why, other than I do tell you you're
eating big people food. Maybe you understand me more than I think you do.

[cheddar and mozarella]: you love cheese. It also makes you proud that you feed
it to yourself. I don't think you're so into it that it will cause digestive problems,
you seem to know your limit, but you do like when I give it to you. You've
even seemed to ask for some with your eyes if I'm eating a cheese stick.

[plain yogurt]: HAHA! You LOVE yogurt! I'm talking love probably as much
as apples. It tastes almost identical to sour cream to me, but hey! Glad you like it.
It helps me get you to eat on days where you've been kind of fiesty at feedings.

Whew! Long list! I don't think I'll do that again. Not that I'll really need to. But I wanted to jot some of this down just to show how far you've come since the beginning, which is a little over four months ago now.
  • You're scooting around like a pro! You pretty much army crawl but it's hysterical to watch you because you'll push your little bottom into the air while propelling yourself forward with your feet. You also are a pro at using your elbows like you're actually army crawling.
  • You pick yourself up on your hands and knees and rock back and forth a lot! Crawling is in the not so distant future, but you're just getting to the phase where you're frustrated with yourself for not being able to do what you're attempting. My guess is we're another 2-3 weeks out from all-out crawling.
  • You're completely out of 6-9 month clothes but you still fit a majority of your 9 month clothes. I'm hoping you gain a bit of chub before you're too long for your 9 month pants because, honestly, you don't have enough chub to really hold up your 9 month pants. It's cute, but it gets annoying for you and I hate watching you get frustrated over something so simple.
  • You babble all. the. time. You constantly say "ma ma" now and have said something that sounded like "apple" and you on occasion say "poppa". You have yet to even say "da da" or a string of the syllable so who knows when that will come out. You love to say "ba ba" and are into finding new noises every day. You're most recent and favorite is a hard "C" or "K" sound. You laugh when I repeat it back and follow it with a word, such as " 'K' is for kite or 'C' is for cat." You love it so much that, at times, it sounds like you're trying to get up phlegm. Makes me and daddy laugh.
  • Laughter has become a regular around here and it always brings laughter to me. Sometimes you giggle at the silliest little things. Among my faves was earlier this week, we went outside to watch the rain. You enjoyed watching and listening so much you began to chuckle. The simple delight you had in such a simple activity brought joy to my heart.
  • You're beginning to learn "no no" as the Christmas tree brings you plenty of mischievous joy and you have seemed to find the only electrical wires that I have to leave partially visible. It only prooves that I was correct in assessing you were going to be strong willed because even if I flick your hand, you will think about "no no", pause for a second, and then decide it's worth being flicked. *sigh* I think you're going to put my patience through the ringer.
  • You're a dare devil. You love, love, love for daddy or me to act like we're going to drop you, swing you back and forth in the air while holding you in a supine position, and toss you up into the air.
  • You've started turning the pages of books by yourself and it's adorable! I love watching your interest in each page. You're also sitting still longer for me when we read books together. And as you're able to turn pages, you like for me to tell you to turn it. I'll lift it up just enough you can grab it, you'll grab the page with your pudgy little fingers and then gingerly flip it. Gah, you're so precious!!
  • One of the joys you're scooting has brought me is you now come to find me at times and you definitely come for me if you're hungry or fussy. It melts my heart to know you love me and want/need me. I'm hoping I will cherish every one of these moments as I know the days where you won't want or need me will come.
  • You still don't completely have waving down 100% but what you can do is give five. Not sure why you caught on so quickly but within a weeks time I could ask you for five and you would slap your little hand to mine. HAHA! Too cute!
  • You give me kisses a lot! Melts my heart when you do it on your own initiative, especially because many times you will reach back to hold my head with one hand and turn to kiss the opposite cheek. Of course, it's more like a lick right now, but it's what you know to do. I'll take wet kisses over none! You also like eskimo kisses.
  • I'm pretty sure you're very discerning. I thought you were hesitant with all strangers but it turns out that, once in a blue moon, you will immediately go to someone. These people also tend to not send my "caution radar" off which means you're a pretty good judge of character. There are even people that send up red flags with me (and other people at times too) and you'll just stare at them, never flashing a smile their direction. Hoping this keeps up and it will mean less talk of how we handle strangers. Not that we won't talk about strangers and what you should do when they approach you, but that we won't have to have several "reminder" conversations.
That long list is what I get, I guess, for not posting an 8 month update. At least I will have these sealed away for memories sake!

Zoë Girl,

The more time I spend with you, the more I grow to love you and wonder what I did before you were in my life. I can't imagine life without you now.

The more I think about it, the more I know God gave us your name because you are so full of LIFE, exactly what your name means. I can only hope that one day that life will come from Him.

Your sweet, vivacious personality comes out more and more. I am so thankful that you will stretch me in some areas as this only means I will grow because of you. I am sure to never have a dull moment when I am with you. You're curiosity will surely kill the cat and allow for ample learning opportunities.

I'm enjoying seeing where this road is taking us and I can't wait to see all that God has in store for you.

Loving you fiercely, sweet girl,
Mommy

P.S. Here are some pics from your 9 month photo shoot. It was really hard to capture any great pics because 1) dogs had done there business in several of the spots I liked and 2) you wanted to eat the leaves, grass, shoes...yeah...do anything EXCEPT look at the camera :)

See...told ya! ;)

This was the best "see how I'm growing" pic I could get. You aren't a fan of bows/head bands are way too interested in what's on top your head to keep it up there. So much for making sure people know you're a girl! HA!

"OOOOOO BUTTONS!!!"

"Hmm...not so sure they taste as good as I thought."

"Let's see what you can do OFF my foot? Alright?"

The only good shot I could capture. You're still one darn stinkin' cutie though!! Oh and notice I had to put a white sheet under you. Otherwise, even this pic wouldn't have been possible...

In Honor of Newtown...

...I will be participating in the "Blogger Day of Silence" this coming Tuesday. I'm repasting the the post that Meg at O. is Me wrote. I was made aware of it by Melissa at Little Mrs. Married. Please, if you so desire, spread the word and join up with us. There is also a way to donate to help those families who were directly affected by this horrible tragedy. Here's Meg's post:

To the Blog World and Anyone Else who Wants to Help,

Yesterday, tragedy struck so many of us in ways we did not foresee. An elementary school and small town in Connecticut was shattered by a mass shooting. We knew we wanted to help. As a side note, I would like to take this time to thank Neely and Michelle for helping organize and be so quick to come together and think of something that we could do as a blogging community. After some planning, we came up with this:

[side note: you can visit Meg's blog to get the HTML. She's also happy to e-mail you the HTML code to be posted, but as I was short on time I wanted to go ahead and get this up]

On Tuesday, December 18th, there will be a blogger day of silence. We will post the button and that's it. Please try to not post anything else that day if possible.

We are also raising money that will go to an organization in the memory of this tragedy. The organization is calledThe Newtown Family Youth and Family Services. Here is the official description of the support service we are donating to:

"Newtown Youth and Family Services, Inc. is a licensed, non-profit, mental health clinic and youth services bureau dedicated to helping children and families achieve their highest potential. NYFS provides programs, services, activities, counseling, support groups and education throughout the Greater Newtown area.

ANY DONATIONS MADE TO NEWTOWN YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES WILL BE DONATED DIRECTLY TO THOSE EFFECTED BY THE SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SHOOTING."

Please visit THIS PAGE to make your donation.

We can't imagine how they must be feeling, especially this close to the holidays. We would love for you to spread the word on your own blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Let's make a difference and use blogging in a positive way. Thank you in advance for participating.

Love,
The Blog World

p.s. Please share this post with your followers! If you leave me a comment on this post asking for the HTML to post on your own blog, I will be happy to reply via email and send it to you.

Five Question Friday [v.11]

I'm beginning to wonder if my brain is really residing inside my head anymore. I surely don't feel like "myself", though I'm not even 100% sure of what that means. I guess I just don't feel like what I remember myself being pre-baby. I've changed, a lot if I recall my old self properly.

Anyway, all that to say, I liked the questions for Five Question Friday today, plus I needed a few prompts to get my juices flowing for a post. So, here you have it:

1. If you bake during the holidays, what is your favorite thing to make?
I have yet to bake during the holidays. Our budget is so tight right now that baking just doesn't figure into any holidays, yet, honestly. BUT if I did bake, I can't say what my favorite item to make would be, but I can tell you that there definitely would be some oatmeal date cookies amidst the many items. They are my fave one of the few holiday treats I just cannot get enough of. I also want to begin a tradition, once my Zoë is old enough, of making sugar cookies with my daughter and any possible subsequent children :)

2. Present giving: Gift bag vs wrapped box?
This one is up in the air for me. Sometimes I prefer wrapping in a bag over a box but it really just depends. I realized after I typed that response, it isn't true. Until I realized a bag would save me money, I went out hunting for a small box to wrap my nephews present in.

Box hands down. More fun to open. More fun to wrap, in my opinion. Just more fun all the way around.

3. What do you keep your thermostat on during the winter/summer in your house?
Our thermostat stays somewhere around 78, no lower than 75 in the summer, and around 70 in the winter. Definitely doesn't go over 73. We do, of course, live in the deep south. And in Houston, I'm told the cool weather we've been having is a rarity. So not happy with that. *sigh*

4. When thinking of your "Christmas to-do list" what percentage "done" are you?
Considering my to do list is very small right now and finances help make it even smaller, I'm 98% done.

5. Do you do the "Elf on a Shelf"? If so, is your Elf naughty and what shenanigans has he gotten into?
Zoë is too small for us to even discuess whether or not "Elf on a Shelf" will become part of our Christmas tradition. I have nothing against it. Just not sure if we will.

This 'n That Thursday [v. 1]

Linking up with Jena today for This 'n That Thursday.

Katie Did What
This is the first post I've written in ten days. I can't really tell you what all has happened in those 10 days except for that somehow my memory has failed me, my daughter has grown, and I have killed way fewer roaches than I did when we first walked into our humble abode.
To say the least, I'm rejoicing over that last piece of information. Roaches do not make a friendly, welcoming pet. They are a creature which have me constantly asking God, "And just why did you make those little pests?!" Unfortunately, they're not completely gone. But my hopes of that happening were dashed to smitherines when one of my neighbors informed me they, too, have roaches. Not sure where they're coming from but they showed up 5 months ago for them and they have yet to be rid of them. *sigh* C'est la vie... :(
THIS was supposed to be in a post a month ago. Seriously. She turned 8 months old last month and I never did an 8 month post because of the move. If that earns a bad blogging mom award, then so be it. What I'm not a fan of, however, is how it has left me wondering what little quirks I missed writing down because we were so busy packing and moving and killing roaches. Oh well...can't go back now. At least I will be posting a 9 month update next week after her appointment.

That little cutie pie has me saying "no no" A LOT. And guess what? I try not to say it a lot. There are really only two things that get a big "no no" around here: the Christmas tree and electrical wires. I always just pull her away and try to distract her with something else, but somehow, she is always right back at the wire for the Christmas tree lights or the computer wires or pulling down the ornaments. (Good thing all the ornaments on the bottom are plastic, right?)
And that is all I have :) Life is a bit mundane as everything has been shut down for the holidays (as in no moms groups meeting right now and there aren't any bible studies starting up). Hope you're this 'n thats of this week have your smiling from the memories.

Loving the Parks

So our weekend was quite eneventful.

Friday came and went.

Saturday Ben worked and Zoë and I headed over to Ben's cousin's son's birthday party (boy that's a mouthful...or whatever since I'm typing). That was fun but I have no pictures to show for it since I have a scooter-almost-turned-crawler on my hands and I was by myself.

(umm...excuse me...she's wandered into the kitchen.....)

So I can't sit in one place and know she's not going anywhere anymore...makes for lots of adventures through the eyes of a awe-struck, explorative babe.

Back to this weekend.

The birthday party was fun. Got to see three of Ben's aunts and of course his cousin, her husband, and their cutie who actually turns one today. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with the cake. His mom even put his hand in it to attempt to get him to start eating it. Nada. He actually whined because his hand was covered in icing.

Kind of makes me wonder what Zoë will do. Though I have an inkling she's adventurous enough she'll at least stick her hand in it.

However, I have to say yesterday was my favorite part of this weekend.

We visited yet another church. I enjoyed it. Much more than the first place we went to but I'm not sure as much as the place we went last weekend.

I went a bit out of my comfort zone in that it was a Baptist church. Now hear me out, I have absolutely nothing against the denomination. I just have never been to a Baptist church that wasn't all "hallelujah!" and "amen!" during the service, didn't have a passionate, yelling pastor, and wasn't extremely traditional. And again, I have nothing against that, I just have never been able to feel at home in that type of church setting. Many people do and I'm very glad they're able to find a community in a church body with that kind of service. I just haven't.

However, this was nothing of the sort. It was contemporary. It was uplifting. And aside from we'll definitely have to visit again when the interim pastor (not sure what happened with their previous pastor) is preaching (they were going over missions they're involved in this past weekend), it was very enjoyable and a definite possibility of becoming our new home for us to get connected with other believers.

Then later that afternoon it was actually quite nice outside. And of course, Houston has a freakin' ton of PARKS! And I love it!

Anywho, we decided to go visit one and let Zoë get some fresh air and enjoy the open area around it. Snapped a couple of pics while we were out too:

Isn't she such a cutie pie? She LOVES the swing :)

I love her so.

Ben's face is priceless. And of course, she adores her daddy.

More or less proof I was there. Take note of her relaxed leg on the side of the slide. HA! She wasn't so sure about the ride down though...

I love this just because Ben's face is candid and Zoë is closely watching some other child.

I love how much she loves the swing :)

And that is how our weekend was. Actually had a weekend with something to talk about. It used to be all boring and chore-filled. Not this past weekend though.

How was your weekend?

Embracing the Fire (Frankly Friday v. 1)

Today I'm participating in a blog hop. Feel free to check out the gal who sets is all up, Amy's, blog :) She just started it a few weeks back and I have a couple of other blog friends who have participated on a regular basis. Love the posts I've seen, just haven't felt like I had much to add. Well...today I do :)

Enjoy.

So I was going through blog posts yesterday, instead of getting ready for the day *sigh*, when I happened to read a great post by Tony Reinke on the DesiringGod ministries blog entitled Learning from Lincoln's Flawed Marriage.

Loved the post. I think everyone should take a moment to read it.

Seriously.

You'll learn more from it than from me; I'm pretty sure I can guarantee it.

What stuck with me was one of the last statements Reinke made:

"There were resources for healing he did not know, and short of healing, embracing the fire is BETTER than escape." [bold print, enlargement, and italics mine]

Why, you might ask, did this resonate with my soul so much?

Well, my heart loves to find ways to escape. Even if it's becoming numb to all around me in hopes that it will soon subside. Though it might be different for everyone, I'm willing to bet many people are like this and they either don't realize it or they deny it. Personally, I've done the latter a lot.

Thankfully, I've gone to counseling a couple years ago and I've been surrounded by friends for many years who don't stand by either of those afformentioned situations.

(Oh and by the way, hopefully you've realized by now I find the point I enlarged applies to much more than marriage. I think it applies to many aspects in all areas of life.)

It can, and more than likely will, make life unseemingly hard, though I've actually found it can be even harder attempting to hide and/or control when we have no ability to truly do either. (Gah, I'm rambling. Just hang tight with me. I have need to spell this out, more for myself than for you.) Yet those hardships, if embraced, as Reinke suggests, can be the refining fire God uses to mold us more into his likeness. Embracing the fire is like allowing God to put us in the crucible so that when we are completely refined we come out reflecting him. All for his glory!

Painful? You betcha!

Rewarding? Far beyond any worth we humans can measure.

For the outcome is a better image of the Creator, which is the reason for all of life.

And though we will not be completely refined this side of Heaven, I can't imagine living a life filled with pain without knowing I'm suffering all for his glory, whether seen or unseen by someone else.

Maybe a bit hard to chew walking into what is known as one of the happiest seasons each year sees. But for me, I think it will hopefully help keep me in the right perspective of all that we celebrate at Christmas.

Yes, the birth of a Savior but who lived a life full of pain all so he could pay my ransom from a life indebted to paying him for my failings.

He is the reason I celebrate this season, for without him I have no capability of truly glorifying God, and that gives me abounding joy!

Lil' Scootin' Booty

So today I give you proof that I no longer can leave Zoë in one spot. Though I haven't been able to because she rolls, she's now much faster and more dedicated in where she is going.

If she sees a book she wants she's headed that way.

Found an electrical wire? Yep. She's gonna try to get it (though I have attempted to hide/cover any wire she might get to).

I've even found her with pieces of carpet fuzz in her mouth. Our carpet was put in just before we moved in so it's hard to get all of these. Anyway, I thought it was cute how she was scooting over to her bookshelf and thought I would share it with you.

Also notice, her tummy doesn't keep her pants up. They start sagging because of how they're pulled when she scoots.

O Tannenbaum (Wordless Wednesday Version v. 6)

*WARNING: minor picture overload. You have been warned! And yes, I used the traditional, original language of the carol. Hoping it was properly placed online*

O Tannenbaum,

O Tannenbaum,

wie treu sind deine Blätter!

Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,

Nein auch im Winger, wenn es schneit.

O Tannenbaum,

O Tannenbaum,

vie treu sind deine Blätter!

Our Bathroom

So yesterday I posted about our new home.

And I had every intention of showing you all of it. Especially because I have family who wanted to see it and it may be a long time before they ever come down for a visit.

Funny enough, someone made a comment about how they love my shower curtain and so I went back to look and see if I had posted pics of both bathrooms. Lo and behold, I didn't. I'm not sure how our bathroom was left out, but I think it's quaint and like that I could hang something on the wall above the towel rack, so I want to show you guys.

This is looking into the bathroom

My only dislike: there isn't an area to keep the aerosol can next to/on the toilet. Thus, it stays on the counter. It doesn't look bad, it just isn't my preference of placement. Otherwise, I love how much space there is and how there is enough storage so the counters stay clear when something isn't in use.

Mmmm...I know it isn't much, but anything extra to make it a bit more of "home" makes me smile. It just makes it that much less "blah", in my opinion.

So, I couldn't really show you this part of the bathroom because it's so small the picture would practically be black. However, see that shelf below the cabinet? And see the basket above the toilet? I love, love, love how I can keep a few rolls of toilet paper and all my monthly necessities kept in nice baskets where they won't get wet and, as far as the private stuff, guests won't have to see all of that, yet it's still handy. I'm also still in love with our shower curtain as much as when we registered for it.

Sorry the pics aren't the best. I just did what I could. I've been so tired lately between a teething baby, working myself through the move, and trying to get myself into the groove of things.

The New Home

Remember how I asked here, if you could tell me what was going on with all those bubbles from my dishwasher?

Well, of course this is only speculation as there is no real way to test it, we are pretty sure some genius, previous tenant put dish detergent and/or soap into the jet dry compartment of our dishwasher. The picture shown is only a small amount compared to what Ben and I walked in on. Thus the towels.

I actually thought I might have put too much, though I've never had that happen before. However, when we stopped the dishwasher to see what was going on, the compartment for detergent, which is where I always put it, hadn't even opened for that cycle.

Needless to say, I might be putting towels down every time we run the dishwasher for a while. It wasn't water either. Of course, water mixed with whatever the heck they put in there makes the bubbles, so the floor does end up wet, but it's not like that because water is overflowing.

Fun times :)

Anyway, I promised pics of the new home. And I will deliver. We'll start from the entryway:

The Entryway

This is what you see when you first walk in. There are two doors, one on either side of you. To the left is the washroom. To the right, Zoë's room. Straight ahead is our living room :)

The washroom

My hubby and dad installed the shelf just above the washer and dryer. Boy am I glad they did! I'm able to fit all of my cleaning supplies for house and car exterior in there as well as all my clothes detergents/stain removers. There are couple of other odds and ends in there, so it's a bit of a catch-all, but I love that we have that space.

Zoë's Room - in her doorway

Zoë's Room - to the right of her doorway

The closed door is her closet. Since it's nothing more than clothes and storage, I didn't take a picture of it. Though it is a nice walk in. (I didn't take pics of either closet. They're both clothes and storage :]) The cabinets in the far, bottom right of this pic are her "dresser".

Zoë's Bathroom (looking from the right corner)

It isn't very big, but it will work perfect if we have friends come to stay. It's really nice to have two bathrooms, though we lived with one just fine.

Zoë's Bathroom

I love how each bathroom has enough space to store stuff in easily accessible places (i.e. the medicine cabinets) so that the countertop stays clean and tidy.

This is the left (that is if you're looking from the entryway) of our living room

It's pretty much become our "study" area. One of the table chairs remain in the corner because, as you will see in a bit, we have to push our table up against the wall. That door leads out to our tiny patio, but in order to have more of a living area, the couch had to be in the way.

This is the right side of our living room.

Better pic of the fireplace and some decoration :)

Yes, we have a fireplace. No, we're probably not going to use it. As much as I love (and I mean L.O.V.E.) wood burning fireplaces (oh and no it doesn't have gas, it's completely old fashioned), there is no grate in there. And the brick is already covered in soot. It's too much of a mess to clean if there is no grate and I'm not buying one :/ Our time will come :)

From the living room you walk into our...

Little Dining Area

The table actually fits much better than I had thought it would. And I was really glad our kitchen counter has a slight lip that protrudes out into the area. It allowed for my two plastic storage bins to fit well and not be in the way.

Our Kitchen

I love how it was relatively easy to make the space my own. And it actually has decent space. Ben can be cleaning dishes or helping me with dinner on one side while I'm working at the other and we aren't in each other's business.

Our...Hallway?

I don't really think it's a hallway, but I don't know what else to call it. This is to the left of the dining area and, as it has since we've been married, our trusty, cheap cabinet has come in handy for some extra storage :) To the left is our bedroom. To the right is our bathroom, which is also, technically the guest bath.

Up first is our Bedroom

This is what you see when you first look in. We have two bookshelves in our room. I think we will always be in need of a good bookshelf :) Behind the curtains is a second door leading out to our patio. Sucks we had to block the one in the living room, nice there were two ways to get out there.

from the left corner of our door

The bookshelf you see in the first picture is behind me.

Gotta love how our fan photo bombs every picture because the pull strings are so stinking long. HA! I wasn't climbing on my bed to hang them over a bulb just to get them out of the picture. So photo bomb they did.

Last but not least: our Patio

It isn't very big, but it is large enough to put a couple of lawn chairs and enjoy sitting outside. It's also already come in handy to have a place to cut Ben's hair.

And that's our little piece of Houston. Very small considering how huge this metropolis is. But we love it. God provided in so many different ways that I'll deal with getting rid of the roaches and bleach stains on my brand new carpet. The complex dropped trying to blame us for the stains and paid to have a carpet cleaning company come and dye the spots. The roaches, well....they're still here but they're almost gone.

Just looking at the pictures as I posted them reminded me of all the many ways God provided for our stuff to fit in here. Items I wondered if I would have to learn to live without because they wouldn't fit out of the way. None of them were necessary to get on in life, just a huge huge blessing. And God saw fit to allow us to keep it ALL.

So blessed!
